Blondespiration

[Claudia Schiffer by Ellen Von Unwerth]

As you can see from my last post, I’ve been trying to be a little more adventurous with my hairstyles lately, and where better to get inspiration from than some of these amazing past and present ladies? I’ve started to develop style crushes on Debbie Harry from her Blondie days, Brigitte Bardot’s effortless chic and I absolutely love Jennifer Lawrence’s soft styling in the current Marie Claire issue at the moment. With so much inspiration coming my way, I felt that it was only right I shared it with all of you!

P.S has anyone else noticed how freakishly similar Georgia Jagger is looking these days to Brigitte Bardot?!

Pop Tarts

Hello everyone! I’m so sorry its been a while – I find it really hard sometimes to find the time to take my own photographs and whatnot, especially when its soooo cold outside! I’d rather post nothing than use ‘blog fillers’ to stay active etc, but I haven’t forgotten about blogging, I’ve just been adjusting to the new season and the heightened intensity of my uni work, and sorting out other bits and pieces that’s all!

I’m really touched that people continue to visit the blog, comment, and generally make me want to blog still! You’re all very lovely : )

So what have I been doing that’s so ‘interesting’? Not much I’m afraid, but I have been working on (and stressing majorly over) the current styling unit I’m doing on my course. Being a perfectionist is exhausting at times! Despite the stress of trying to organise models, hair and make up people etc (as well as being urged to buy clothes for the shoot with money we don’t posess! Oh the joys of being a student!) we finally pulled it all together and got some shots I’m really proud of! I’m especially proud since Sian and I did the hair and make up ourselves, it came out much better than I could’ve planned. I hope you like the shots – isn’t our model gorgeous?

We’ve been working with various references, but I’m going to leave that with you to figure out and interpret for yourselves (clue is in the title, hint hint) because there’s nothing I dislike more in the fashion industry than hearing things like ‘darling, it was inspired by an oak tree suffocating in the city in a fight against capitalism!’ etc etc… haha. Sometimes I wonder why I’m even wanting to enter into this industry, but what can I say, I love it flaws and all! (Perhaps that makes me sound more pretentious than I would’ve if I’d discussed my list of ‘highly intellectual’ concepts… dont you love irony?! Hahah.)

Hope everyone’s doing ok and looking forward to CHRISTMAS, which is in… it’s too late at night to count, but well, just over a month, yay!

See you all again soon, I promise!

Bag Lady

Hello everyone! Sorry if I’ve been a bit quiet lately – I’m not losing interest in blogging, I’m just spending more time doing other things, like chilling out time with my housemates, going out, and getting on with work, that’s all! : )

I’m sorry to say I don’t have a twin, although I’ve always wanted one… so don’t be fooled. I’m doing a styling project at the moment, which is turning out to be quite fun! On Friday I got to dress up in nomadic inspired outfits for a Stylathon we did, as you can see. I don’t usually wear leaves in my hair! Haha. I look like I’ve ran through a wardrobe, and picked up all kinds of clothes on the way through, don’t you think? I felt like Little Red Riding Hood hobo edition in the second outfit!

Its such a strange thought to me, that I used to want to be a stylist, because it really is a very hard job, and one which is almost impossible to make good money from. Thats not to say that it can’t be done, of course… but to any of you who wish to go into styling, I’d really encourage you to showcase your ‘works’ on a blog, because its a great way to get exposure, and get your work out there without spending much money at all – and also a really good way to show your enthusiasm for the subject to any potential employers who may be out there! : )

I took a trip into London the other day, and made some purchases – one of which you’ll be seeing very soon! Studying Fashion at University is really evil, because we are always studying the latest trends and whatnot, and yet we have no money to buy any of them… I’m sure some of you will feel my pain! So from now, I’m on a shopping ban… watch this space, we’ll see how long that one lasts, haha. Perhaps you’ll be seeing me wearing leaves, conkers and all other kinds of ‘free’ things more often? That could be interesting.

For now, over and out, and back to work… sob. Love! xxx

A Gothic Romance

Photography by Ellen Rogers

I’m currently doing a styling project at university at the moment, which means I have been looking through lots and lots of editorials, getting as much inspiration as possible – something which I’m really enjoying because I love fashion photography! This is the main reason why I have joined Tumblr (follow me if you like!); its a great place to store inspiration and beautiful photos – a godsend when, like me, you’re a bit wary of loading up your laptop with hundreds of files!

Today, we had some help from fab stylist Kim Howells, who has worked on various shoots for Dazed and Confused, as well as music videos and whatnot. Whilst giving my friend and I some tips for the shoot we’ll be doing in November, she showed us a shoot she had worked on for Piers Atkinson S/S 2011, which I have totally fallen in love with. The perfect mix of romance and gothic style (one of my absolute favourite combinations!) everything about this shoot is wonderfully like a dark fairytale. The perfect shoot for a closet-goth girl like me, haha : ) Isn’t the spidery head piece amazing?! If you’d like to see the rest of the set, you can view them here!

The main fun of photography has always been the oh-so-necessary Photoshopping session afterwards, which is another reason why I love this set. I don’t really like ‘straightforward’ photographs so much, and with all the technologies available to use today, I think people shouldn’t be scared to be a bit more experimental when it comes to post production! But that’s just my opinion; people are of course, free to create whatever they love – which is why the creative industries are so exciting to me!

Thanks again to all of you who continue to read my blog – I’m glad to be back, and am enjoying it more than ever, thanks in large part to all of you lovely people : ) take care everybody!

Walking With Ghosts

Models: Alex and myself

Photographs edited by myself.

Its not every day that you get to dress up in a vintage Edwardian wedding dress and prance around a really beautiful old farm yard with some friends, taking photographs, but that’s what I did today!

I’ve wanted to do a ‘ghostly’ photoshoot for a while, so today we grabbed the opportunity before the four of us split off and go back to our respective universities, sob sob. The little back story we thought up was that there was a young, troubled married couple who lived in the Victorian times, who came to a nasty end one night when the poor, tormented husband lost his temper, and shot his wife before turning the gun himself… really lovely stuff, I know! Haha. We’re a charming bunch really, I promise! Since then, ‘our’ spirits wander the cobblestone yards day after day, confused about who we are, what we’re meant to be doing, and also most likely, why on earth some random family is living in and enjoying our house? Haha.

I can hardly call myself a photographer (I cheat most of the time I’m taking photos and use the auto settings, shhhh!) but I do love dressing people and/or myself up, taking some pictures, then taking to my office (well, bed…) with a nice cup of tea, ready for my favourite part – Photoshopping! I remember once in a media lesson, my tutor told us that film editors are generally VERY boring people, does the same go for people who find joy in editing images? Do I even need to ask? Haha, oh dear.

Which is exactly what I’m about to get back to now – and is how I’ve spent my Saturday night, tutor’s point proven, right? Oooops. Thank you to all of you have been visiting by the way, I’m really appreciative of everyone who takes time out to read my blog, and also to those of you kind enough to leave little comments for me : ) you’re all wonderful!

I hope you’ll all enjoy the rest of your weekend!
Love from Katie xoxo

P.S If you’re unfamiliar with Photoshop, and would like to know how to add a vignette (dark frame) to the photograph, like I did in the above images, its very easy! Just go to Filter > Distort > Lens Correction then play with the ‘Vignette’ toggles until you get the desired effect – simple! : ) Happy editing!
